Our friends at Deep Foundation are working with an amazing organization called Rock The School Bells, a hip-hop educational youth conference based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Through a comprehensive blend of workshops and performances, Rock the School Bells aims to enhance students’ ability to:

think critically about current issues in their communities as well as in the world

read and write about topics related to their life’s experiences

display effective oral and written communication through readings, spoken word and poetry

understand the historical and cultural aspects of hip-hop and its effect on society, education and personal development

They are currently raising funds for the conference and Deep Foundation is hoping to be one of the guest facilitators to teach their hip hop writer’s workshop out there in March. With a mission to empower and educate our youth about the importance of higher education and promote social change within their communities, please spread the word and support!

Be sure to check out the fundraising page for more info and watch the video below on what it’s all about:

In an era of economic instability, flawed educational values and political apathy, “Generation ILL” serves as a head-nod to those most affected by these trends. Despite the recent downturns however, these individuals choose to continue, persevere, and carry-on in the spirit that life was meant to be lived- with an eye towards better days and both feet planted in the present. This is our homage to the working class, the youth coming into their own amidst such uncertainty and those who struggle in the hopes of what tomorrow may bring.

11 May 2011

NY’s Deep Foundation and Philippine Forum Start Hip-Hop Writer’s Workshop June 10

WOODSIDE, NEW YORK – In a collaborative effort between a community-based outreach group and a collective of MCs bound by their love for music, a celebration of the innate cooperative spirit fostered by grassroots movements springs to life in Queens, New York. Deep Foundation, a long time staple in New York’s underground hip hop scene has banded with the Philippine Forum, a well respected not-for-profit organization that offers direct services to both the Filipino and the larger immigrant community.

In a consolidation of resources, the two are proud to announce the launch of The Hip Hop Writer’s Workshop, housed in the Bayanihan Filipino Community Center of Woodside Queens, to be instructed by Woodside’s own M.U.G. Shot and ILL Poetik, both members of Deep Foundation. The two hour workshop will be open to teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 on Fridays at 7PM starting June 10th, 2011. A requested fee of $25 will cover one-year membership of the youth participants to Philippine Forum and contribution to the use of space and maintenance of the Bayanihan Filipino Community Center, which has become a home to community organizations and different youth, workers, and many other programs.

“With respect to the Philippine Forum’s mission of social assistance and their endeavors to better the community through enacting positive and meaningful social change, Deep Foundation has taken up the parallel cause of educating, enlightening and motivating local youth through the use of creative expression. With the two entities tackling issues of poverty, social inequality and discrimination through their respective mediums, undertaking the creation of a workshop geared specifically towards the propagation of cultural, social and self awareness for the stalwart yet sometimes forgotten younger generation, can only be seen as a marriage between the spiritual and practical,” says Rosendo Pili a.k.a. M.U.G. Shot.

The workshop also aims to prepare the participants for upcoming open-mics and the Sumisigaw Youth Festival, one of the festivals organized by the Philippine Forum and SANDIWA National Alliance of Filipino-American Youth, which will be held in October 22.

Through the poetic discourse of two home grown musicians and the stern awareness of an organization entrenched in the day to day community struggle, The Hip Hop Writer’s Workshop serves as a rally point, a beacon and a podium for those whom our future relies upon.

For more information on the Hip Hop Writer’s Workshop, please email Anne Beryl Corotan, Philippine Forum Youth Coordinator, at aberylc@gmail.com or info@philippineforum.org or call (718) 565-8862.

Liza de Guia, 2011 James Beard Award nominee for Best Video Webcast, is a master storyteller appealing to our stomach and our hearts. Each week her video blog tells the passionate stories of the people behind great food.

Check out Liza’s dream meals with some hilarious guests:

1. Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?

My dream dinner party would definitely be on a beach somewhere. Maybe a tiki torch lit dinner with a cool breeze set on the Whitsunday Islands in Australia, or on the remote beaches of El Nido in Palawan. I’d have my dad do the cooking. He makes, hands down, the best pork rib tip adobo on the planet. Little rib tips in a unctuous, umami packed sauce that you can eat with your fingers. Best pork adobo I’ve ever had and I keep trying to find someone who makes a better adobo than he does. It’s not possible. And every time I try to make it, even though I have his recipe, it never comes out like his. Ask anyone that’s ever had it. It’s the best most satisfying dish. And I can tell you, he worked over many many years to perfect the secrets to his recipe.

I’d also have my dad grill up 2lb lobsters on the 1/2 shell, and make his signature stone crab chili claws in his homemade Szechuan peppercorn, scallion, ginger and garlic sauce. It’s hot; it leaves a burn, but a good burn. My dad makes the best most memorable food I think. As for guests, I’d love to just invite a lot of funny people. I like to laugh, a lot. It’s my favorite activity. And when I laugh, I sometimes snort, so I’d probably pack my table with a bunch of comedians who could embrace that and be ok with it like Will Ferrel, Will Arnett, David Cross, Kristen Wiig, Joel McHale, Jon Stewart, Conan O’Brian, Tracy Morgan, Amy Poehler, John Cusak. Pack the night with funny people so I’d leave out of breath and with my ribs in pain from cracking up. Then, I’d invite Johnny Depp so I could just look at him. Bono so I could thank him. Peter Jackson so I could ask him a favor. And, after that, maybe bring back Bob Marley from the dead for some great reggae music on the beach post-dessert. Dessert being a tall glass of halo-halo with a generous scoop of ube ice cream.

2. A perfect 4-course meal for you would consist of what and from where?

Keep in mind, I’d be eating this meal over the course of a good number of hours…

Appetizer:

A heaping pile of salt and pepper fried dungeness crab from R&G Lounge in San Francisco. Your eyes will explode when you see this thing. It’s one of those things you just need to eat with your hands and be happy about it. It’s Oh-My-God good.

Soup:
Totto Ramen’s Chicken Paitan Ramen w/extra pork belly and a seasoned boiled egg. My favorite bowl of ramen goodness right now in New York City. The broth is purely chicken based, but I think it’s magic based. Or magic chicken based. You won’t believe it’s a chicken broth.

Entree:
Slow-Roasted Lechon from Cebu. I’d get seconds or thirds of the crispy, glassy skin for sure…and I would take that skin and dunk it shamelessly in that patis, garlic and vinegar dipping sauce. Seriously, is there anything better in life than pork like this? Nope. You can’t convince me.

Dessert:
Churros. A pile of warm homemade churros from an authentic street food cart in the middle of Mexico. Preferably, the ones you get at the local town fairs around the main city squares. No need for chocolate dipping sauce, either. If the churros are made right, crisp on the outside and moist and doughy on the inside, all powdered up with cinnamon and sugar to the point where only 3/4 of it actually makes it to my mouth, the rest onto my shirt… I’m all smiles.

3. Anthony Bourdain or Andrew Zimmerman?

Anthony Bourdain obviously. No contest. I’ve been a No Reservations fan for years. It’s my favorite food show on TV.
Plus, I’m the kind of girl who loves a little snark, a lot of honesty and a bit of foul-mouthed humor. I trust Mr. Bourdain. I’d trust him with my food-loving, semi-inebriated (at times) life. Plus, I mean, have you seen this picture?
